September 25th Coin Sale - to include what is likely to be the most expensive coin sold in the South West this year!
If you are thinking of selling your coin collection, we are hosting a no obligation valuation day on the 22nd July here at our Bicton Street Auction Rooms
The First Gold Coin of the New World.
COLOMBIA.1622-E 2 Escudos. (SF) Cartagena or Bogota mint. Phillip III (1598-1621), posthumous issue. Est £25,000-45,000.
The story so far - back in February a lady came to the saleroom for a valuation. In amongst the items brought in were a few Spanish Galleon Wreck Coins which had been bought while on a holiday in America in the early 80's.
The most significant among them is known as a cob coin (a rough hammered coin) and was minted in Columbia in either Cartagena or Bogota when the death of Phillip III had not been received in the Americas.
Being the first of its kind in the world and the fact it came from the Santa Margarita Galleon which was sunk in a squall off the Florida Keys this is an extremely rare coin with just 9 examples known in the world and ours certainly ranking as being one of the best preserved examples.
It was sent to NGC for certification and received back in May. It also comes with its original Treasure Salvors Inc. artifact certificate. With the top price in auction being just over $100,000 the vendor is as amazed as we are excited to be offering it to a global market.
The sale is timed to fit in with the coin fair COINEX in London and shall have national and international coverage.
