Ancent Soi 1995, 'Herds boy taking cows home', oil on canvas, signed and dated, gallery sales label with title verso, 96x61cm, framed Born in 1937 in Yatta, he started selling woodcarvings and paintings at the Nairobi City Market for a politician friend in the early sixties before venturing into art himself under the tutelage of Congolese artist, Banto, who he said in earlier interviews ‘was the best artist in Kenya’ then. It was around this time that he entered a painting in the ESSO calendar competition judged by Joseph Murumbi where he won the first prize. His work was subsequently included in the calendar and that marked the beginning of his long partnership with Murumbi and the African Heritage. Having embarked on his journey as a full time artist, Soi had a prolific career where he made paintings of wildlife and landscapes inspired by the vast Yatta plateau. These were heavily punctuated by the two main ethnic communities that strode the area; Kamba & Maasai, whose traditions and village life form the core of his subject. A highly skilled painter, he was a stickler to detail. This is evident in how he painted his animal coats and the copious hours he’s spend painting the elaborate items of clothing and jewellery that adorn his subjects. Soi’s career continued to flourish at a time when most African countries were gaining independence and with the Munich Olympics (1972) approaching, Africans were allowed to participate in a competition to make the event’s poster. As fate would have it, he won the first prize (1971). This got him worldwide acclaim as Kenya’s (and probably one of Africa’s) most talented artists. He was offered a lucrative residency in Munich in 1972 but had to cut it short and come back home for the birth of his first son towards the end of that year. That son is artist Michael, currently one of the most recognizable artists in the region. Through the seventies into the nineties, Soi exhibited in Japan, the USA, Germany and in Kenya Provenance _ from a private collection located in Totnes. A Rare Omega Speedmaster 'Ed White' Pre-Moon Chronograph Stainless Steel Gent's Chronograph Wristwatch, reference no. ST 105 003-65, movement serial no. 2401134**, circa 1966, tachymeter bezel, matt black 'T SWISS MADE T' dial with chronograph centre seconds, baton markers, minute markers, triple subsidiary dials, cal. 321 17 jewel movement with inner cap, Omega bracelet, boxed, 40mm. Winds and runs. Age related faults, buttons need attention ** In 1965 Edward Higgins 'Ed' White (1930-1967) was the first American to 'walk in space' outside of his Gemini 4 capsule. The Omega 105.003 has been coined the 'Ed White' as it was on the wrist of White during this historic milestone in space exploration ** The production period of the 105.003 was very short, lasting around three years from 1963. In 1966 it was superseded by the 'Professional' ref.105.012 famously worn on the moon in 1969

A Rare Jaeger-LeCoultre Mark 11 6B/346 RAF Pilots Military Wristwatch 1948, the 34.9mm case with black dial and the back marked with crow's foot 6B/346 3355/48 Provenance: from the estate (and by descent) of Frederick George Payne Army no. 22734171 and sold with a copy of his military papers. A contender for the best military watch ever made, It is believed that only around 2,950 JLC Mark 11s were produced for the RAF.

BERNARD CASPAR HARDY (1726-1819) A pair of late 18th or early 19th century wax studies of a seated Russian gentleman in a red robe with a bowl on his knee, and a lady carrying wearing a bonnet and shawl stitching a garment, both framed and glazed, 30 x 25cm. Hardy worked in Cologne at the turn of the 18th century, he is considered one of the finest exponents of his craft Two comparable works are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert museum.
