Arthur William Devis RA (1762 - 1822), British portrait painter, three quarter length portrait of Sir John Shore, 1st Baron of Teignmouth 1751 - 1834, 3rd Governor General of India 1793 - 98, first President of The Bible Society and Official of the East India Company. In the portrait he is standing by a table with the 'Address of the British Inhabitants of Calcutta' and his hand rests on a copy of the 'Life of Sir William Jones' (1746 - 1794), oil on canvas, 139 X 132cm, ornate gilt gesso frame
Provenance: Sir John Shore and by descent from the family
There is crazing to the paint. Conservation work has been carried out including being laid on new canvas. The frame is very good considering age _ a few minor knocks. This has come into us from the vendor who lives in the South West and is a direct descendant. It relates to the "railway spike" diamond brooch also in the sale.
